Saks Potts Coats–Love Them or Hate Them?

Fashion trends come and go. Some we’re sad to see leave, while we give others a cheery wave on the way out of our closets (we’re looking at you, overalls). While this year has seen a resurgence of ’90s grunge style–think acid-washed jeans, plaid, and undone hairstyles–there is another trend arriving on the scene.

On Trend… or on the Way Out?

The Saks Potts line of fanciful coats is on trend–so much so, we can’t see them standing the test of time. They come in an array of candy-coated hues, from cotton candy pink to traffic cone orange. This number, made of dyed leather and lamb’s fur, is like something out of a Disney movie. If Cruella De Ville stylings are your thing, you might want to assign a place for this one in your closet. However, critics might scoff that $1,300 seems a steep price to pay for something you could pick up at your local Halloween store.

If the trend catches your eye, we suggest dipping into it with a fur-trimmed coat like this one. It still has the kitsch appeal of the furry number, but it’s paired with a classic silhouette and neutral leather. There’s a better chance that it will last the season before the trend goes again. Welcome to the Winter Runway

Winter runways are studded with nods to vintage ski fashion: think short cut bomber jackets, to-the-knee puffers, camouflage, and fur embellishments. The aesthetic is futuristic, but not overwhelmingly so.

What is Setty Gallery?

Setty Gallery is an online jewelry store that connects international designers to a global marketplace and gives customers worldwide access to unique handmade designer jewelry at their fingertips.  

What’s your story?

I have always had a passion for traveling.  A big part of traveling for me is the handmade jewelry I find in each country. With each piece I find, there comes a story. For example, in Jerusalem, I discovered handmade designs by Ayala Bar. With each place I visit, I find a new piece to add to my collection. I’ve been approached by people who say they adore my jewelry but can’t find anything like it. One day it occurred to me – why not take all of my favorite pieces and put them in one place so that everyone, no matter where they are in the world can share the stories. With that, I started Setty Gallery: Setty my last name, Gallery as a museum of my favorite pieces. I currently carry handmade jewelry made in Colombia, America, the Philippines, Bulgaria, Israel and more.

Do you have a brick and mortar store, are you online or both?

Setty Gallery is solely an online boutique, with items you won’t find in your local department store. Jewelry lovers from anywhere in the world can have access to the same pieces. 

If you’re solely online how do potential buyers try on the pieces of interest? It’s my impression that women like to touch and feel what they are buying.

With the online boutique, comes a more personal feel. We offer exceptional customer service. When someone has an event and needs to match a piece to their dress, or is looking for a certain type of jewelry, we find them the best possible piece. If they don’t end up liking what they’ve chosen we offer 30-day returns with money back guarantee. Ordering online is most convenient because people like jewelry at their doorstep instead of running to stores, especially when the jewelry is from all over the world.

Is all the jewelry featured on your website handmade?

Every single piece featured on our website is handmade and carefully hand-picked by me. Each piece is one-of-a-kind. I love handmade jewelry because there’s no machine involved and the process used is amazing. This allows love and care when making the piece. It’s 100% ethical, and fair trade is used.   

You have a variety of designers and price points. What does this allow you to do?

Yes, we do have a variety of designers and price points. Our prices range from $50 to about $500 depending on the piece.  This allows the customer to pick through a variety of jewelry based on their budget and their interests.  

How did you decide to feature Encanto Jewelry on your site? Do you think there is a stronger need for this type of jewelry now?

Encanto jewelry is eco-friendly, and every purchase goes towards the preservation of the Tagua rainforest and helps reduce poverty. I think there is a stronger need for this today as there is much more of a “green” trend in lifestyle and eco-friendly products. The products are handmade using the Tagua seed that is very rare and can only be found in the countries Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, and Peru. By wearing the seed, you are helping protect the rainforest and the lives of these people while the seed shines brightly on you.

Designers assure the fashion-forward that the must-have trend for this fall is an oversized coat from their favorite designer. Runway models look like children playing in their father’s closet as they sashay along in oversized outerwear that has giant pockets and huge lapels.

Some look like menswear with tweed, wool, or flannel in gray and houndstooth. Gigantic down-filled puffer coats make audiences wonder if regular-sized people can wear them and still fit through standard sized doorways.

When tall, thin women wear oversized coats, they can appear off balance, as if a stiff wind could catch the coat like a sail and carry them away. Average-sized women look much larger than average when they add the extra bulk of a coat that is much too big.

Oversized winter coats feature proportions so extreme they can err on the side of ridiculous. Coats are meant to keep one warm outdoors, but what happens when the wearer reaches their destination? If you drape them over the back of a chair at the office, they will trail the floor. They’re too large to hang on a coat rack or drape over the arm while shopping. What will wearers do with them at restaurants and movie theaters? They might look adorable on models in a snowball fight, but one wonders if they fall down, will they be able to get up with all that extra bulk?

With their high price tag, oversized coats could eat up a huge chunk of an individual’s fall clothing budget. Spring is in the air, Easter is only a few days away and I, for one, am itching for spring fashion! I’m so anxious to put the mukluks and boots away and trade them in for sandals and loafers! One of the hottest shoe trends for Spring/Summer 2018 is without a doubt, silver shoes!

Wearing socks with sandals hasn’t taken over the fashion scene completely yet, but if that’s a trend you want to try, silver heels are a great choice for that! If you want to be daring and try it out for yourself, we recommend choosing sandals with block heels. This is such a popular look for spring and you really can’t wrong. They are easy to walk in, add just the right amount of height, and they look sleek and stylish with most outfits.

Silver is one of my personal favorite shoe colors because silver shoes go with almost anything! You can easily wear silver shoes with anything from jeans and a graphic tee, to athleticwear like your favorite leggings and hoodie.

Silver shoes are so easy to wear and very on trend for spring and summer. Look for feminine embellishments like crystals or sequins for dressy occasions. These glittery block heeled sandals from JD Williams, would be a great wedding shoe.

If you want a more casual shoe, look for sneakers with a metallic sheen or ballet flats with a mirror finish. I love the crackly, textured finish on these slip-on espadrilles… They would be perfect with raw hem cropped jeans and a cool cami this summer.

Silver shoes are a great way to add a feminine touch to the punk rock look that Balenciaga is making waves with. Don’t be afraid to try silver shoes this spring. We have a feeling you’re going to love the way they look once you try them!

We can always count on Louis Vuitton to blur the lines between menswear and womenswear. Take a look at recent runways, and you’ll see bedazzled menswear and sequins for the boys. The women’s runways are filled with hoodies and traditionally “male” pieces – though the continued dominance of athleisure caters to men and women alike.

This is where Vuitton’s new Archlight sneaker comes in. Though designed for women, Jaden Smith has been seen sporting the ultra-futuristic shoe (this is not the first time he’s been out and about wearing womenswear – as a personal friend of Vuitton, he rocks many crossover pieces with ease). With an exaggerated arch and chunky design, the shoe will make you feel like you can run faster and jump higher (though we don’t recommend much hard play in these beauties, which run $1,090 a pair). No big guys will be sporting this look since sizes top out at men’s size 9. Now I know why they are so expensive “crafted of calfskin”. Now I don’t feel bad spending $1000!

These shoes have ultimate crossover appeal. GQ called them the “must-have” shoe of the season. Don’t rush off to buy them, however, because Archlight is sold out. If you want a pair, you’ll have to add them to your wish list and wait, unless you have friends in high places. Would you spend over $1000 on this shoe?

 Meet Hurache, Nike’s Humble Alternative to the Louis Vuitton Archlight

We recently discussed Louis Vuitton’s Archlight sneaker, which flew off the shelves (metaphorically, since these are phone order) so fast that we had to see if they were worth the hype. With a celebrity endorsement from Jaden Smith, the Archlight appeals to both men and women. Unfortunately, most of us cannot spend over $1,000 on a pair of athleisure shoes, so our search began for a suitable replacement.

For inspiration, we looked to Nike, a mainstream leader in athleisure fashion. Their Huarache shoe has the futuristic silhouette of the Archlight, but you can find it for $100 or less. The shoe has many on-trend elements: metallic hues, a chunky heel, and molded underlays. Nike also has something that even the great Louis Vuitton does not: functionality.  Loving the multi-color Huarache as seen above and obsessed with the metallics!

Huarache is a running shoe. You can actually take it on a jaunt around the neighborhood without fear of ruining your investment. Collaborations are nothing new, but they’re certainly becoming more popular in the athleisure world. Companies strive to find the perfect balance between form and function by pairing with some of the country’s top designers – and we’re eating it up. Finally, workout gear that can take you from yoga class to the juice bar or the grocery store is available – is it too good to be true? Sacai paired with NikeLab for winter sportswear, Adidas paired with Stella McCartney for tennis, yoga and workout clothes, Sorrel paired with Chloe for snowboots, Supreme collaborated with North Face, Balenciaga and Crocs, Jimmy Choo and Uggs, and the list goes on and on. Next collab on the rise…Mac x Puma, soon to launch (that sounds interesting). Luckily both men and women can look cool in sportswear collabs.

Adidas has been one of the pioneers in the athleisure movement. It started with its Stella McCartney collaboration, which enjoyed such rousing success that the brand moved onto other, edgier collaborations. Love the leopard sneakers.

Alexander Wang, already well known for his urban, sporty aesthetic, seemed like a natural fit for Adidas’ line of footwear. We love these for their low tops, geometric shapes, and minimalist yet decidedly urban design. Shop this collection right here.

Daniëlle Cathari x Adidas Originals was so popular that it sold out in a day! Tried to snag one in Soho’s Cathari Pop-Up shop. The sweats were gone in an hour. I was even willing to take bright green which is never my favorite color. Cathari can probably thank Kendall Jenner for that development, as she wore the athleisure line to promote it. If you want to score a piece of the collection, you’ll have to look for overpriced options on eBay. Every single piece is sold out! We love it when athleisure goes high fashion. PRADA’S SUMMER STRAW BAGS: HIT OR MISS?

Straw bags are the “it bags” or the must-haves this season. Straw bags are seen at the beach, lunching, shopping, parties and more. This season we love Prada’s 2018 summer collection. There are many different shapes, sizes, and embellishments but the prices are sky-high for a bag that’s used for the summer season and made out of straw. Affordable? As we’ve stated in other “straw bag” posts…they’re versatile bags, but it boils down to what you willing to spend. How cool are the bucket bags? I’m always up for the latest designer trends.

Straw bags are fun and pair perfectly with jeans, summer dresses, maxi skirts, beach cover-ups, exercise leggings or your favorite LBD. The bags transition easily from day to night! You can always carry a label-less bag if you don’t want to spring for the designer label. It’s your choice! We’d go for the designer bag! That brings us to Prada’s straw looks. Check out our favorites in Prada’s summer collection:  The Prada Straw Bag with the white leather trim (or pink leather trim) is stunning but weighs in at a whopping $2700. The blue leather trim Bucket Bag is only $1700. Sounding more reasonable? You may ask…how can straw bags cost so much? Could it be the designer label and the leather trim? Nuts, right? It’s what you’re willing to pay for a designer label. The Black Straw Flowers Bag, while adorable is also $1700. This bag is chic in either color with great attention to detail. The Straw Red Flowers Bag is as versatile as the black version.

You’re paying for the designer’s name. Seriously, straw is straw and Prada is Prada. Are you willing to spend a few thousand dollars? Either way, straw bags are a must this season. I’m a high-end label fashion blogger. Prices do not flip me out anymore although I think twice before making a pricey purchase, especially when bags are not typically classic. We’re well into summer, and these straw bags haven’t been reduced a penny! If you’re up for something whimsical and fun the Woven Wicker Bag with the velvet trim is the way to go. These bags do cost a ton.

Your thoughts on Prada’s straw bags? Prada’s fall line is great and waiting to buy a fall leather bag might be more practical. You can still go for great looking straw bags that don’t break the bank. Here’s an option for bags that don’t carry the Prada label.

We’re featuring some Helmut Lang favorites of ours. Fashion remembers two types of style icons through the decades – the first are people like Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn, who embody timeless class and elegance that people still try to capture today. The second is the daring and the avant-garde – people like Lady Gaga and Grace Jones, who continually pushed the bounds of fashion. Today, Helmut Lang is making their mark by trying to emulate both. The Austrian fashion house’s newest offerings take unfussy classics – think crewneck sweaters and tailored pieces – and lend a little edge with details like rips, alterations and a typically “a quiet color scheme”. Helmut Lang’s simple statement pieces allow you to make them your own. (wear it your way) The all-black outfit looks great with the bright blue pop of color as seen with the architectural style mini flap-over bag. Pair anything you want with Lang’s styles. I’m totally loving the black cotton pocket tee .

HELMUT LANG FAVORITES:

This Helmut Lang skirt takes a classic silhouette – the quintessential pencil skirt – and takes it away from the office drudgery by adding details like a decorative buckle and asymmetrical hem. You can mix colors or wear a simple monochromatic look. The pieces take on a fashion-forward vibe, with just enough chic to take it seamlessly from a casual office setting to post-work drinks.

Similarly, this Helmut Lang  crewneck sweater takes one of fashion’s most versatile looks – a beige crew – and strategically adds an asymmetrical hemline and rips to lend an air of punk rock to a piece generally associated with sensibility and conservatism. Wear it to communicate your personal flair and play on classicism in favor of rocker chic. We also love the white twisted crew neck sweater with the asymmetrical hem. If CBGB’s still existed, you would fit right in – but with the right heels and accessories, you wouldn’t look out of place at a martini bar, either.  If you’re looking for a funky yet minimalist look Helmut Lang is the way to go. Their styles are slightly different each season maintaining similar colors and designs. Although this season there are bright pops of color as seen in the pink blazer coat with the ragged edge. No reason a winter coat has to be dull or boring. If you’re looking for embellishments (adopted by Prada, Miu Miu, Gucci just to name a few), you won’t find them in Helmut Lang’s collection.
